WKA World President

Dave Sawyer

“Bringing the WKA into a new era, uniting tradition and innovation for martial artists worldwide.”

The New Era Begins

Dave Sawyer took over the World President position of the WKA in 2018.

Driven by a passion to restore the WKA’s legacy, he formed a senior team and, in 2019, led WKA to host its first standalone World Championships in years. Successful events in Poland, Wales, and Bali marked the vibrant start of a new era for the association.

Leadership and Global Impact

With a wave of fresh faces joining alongside returning members, the WKA has a bright future ahead. Dave’s lifelong connection with the association began as New Zealand’s National Representative, growing through roles in Oceania and Asia Pacific, to World Vice President, and ultimately President.

His global approach and respect throughout the martial arts world have helped cement WKA’s standing as a leader in international competition and standards.

The Vision Forward

Dave resides in New Zealand and, together with Kirsty Sawyer and the senior leadership, has ushered in a culture of innovation and growth. Their vision has revitalized interest in the WKA ahead of its 50th anniversary.

He has given the WKA to the members with a new constitution which puts the leadership in the hands of Martial Artists.

For Dave, connecting with the global martial arts community is the most rewarding aspect of leadership: “One of the best things is meeting great people — I’m always ready to learn from every member of our association.”

If you meet Dave at an event, be sure to say hello and share your story.
